How to Design an Office Layout that Promotes Maximum Efficiency

September 9, 2020 by Anna

Lately, a new term about the way people work has been generated: Productivity.

Although most of the time when we are reading articles about it, we see tips about the way you should organize your schedule etc., your office layout matters too.

So, keep reading for four office layout ideas to help you achieve maximum efficiency!

Table of Contents

  • 1. Play With Colors
  • 2. Let The Sunshine In
  • 3. The Importance of Ergonomics
  • 4. No Matter Your Office Layout, Keep It Tidy

1. Play With Colors

There is not much room for objection when we say that color affects our productivity and psychology. In fact, there is a whole science studying the effects of color on the human brain and it can help you choose the right ones for you.

However, since some universal reactions on color have already been noted, you should consider the following list to both narrow your possibilities and get the urge to work better and faster.

Angela Wright, a famous color psychologist who was worked with Shell, Unilever, and Motorola, among others, says there are four psychological primaries:

  • Blue for the mind and all mind-related tasks.
  • Red for the body and physical activities.
  • Yellow for the emotions, self-confidence, and ego.
  • Green for balance between all the above.

Also, saturation plays an important role, so before you choose the color code you like, make sure you pick the right shade too.

2. Let The Sunshine In

Not all people can change the color on their walls, especially when they do not own their workspace. Before you change your office layout, make sure you “let the sunshine in!”

Natural light is always associated with positive, energetic feelings of creativity, harmony, and productivity. More specifically, a 2013 research suggests that exposure to sunlight improves workplace efficiency.

Of course, again, not everyone can just take down a wall and let more light enter their room, but you can arrange your office layout so you are hit by as much sunlight as possible.

Extra tip: For more natural light, rent an office on the second floor.

If sunlight is not an option, you don’t have to move your office! Play with artificial lights and choose the right shades. Do you work better under fluorescent lights or do you need warmer colors? This is something you and only you need to decide.

3. The Importance of Ergonomics

You cannot work properly when you are not feeling comfortable. There is no way you are going to be productive when your desk chair is wrong for your body.

However, before you get a new one, you can always adjust it and play with it in order to achieve the best possible body position. Focus on the heights of your chair and your office. If possible, you can always purchase an adjustable height desk too. These fellas are priceless!

Take a look at your desk setting and make sure your wrists are straight, your thighs parallel to the floor, and the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level.

4. No Matter Your Office Layout, Keep It Tidy

When you are searching for office design ideas on Pinterest and see a photo of a workspace or office layout, you most likely love it and pin it. No matter the colors or the design, there is one common thing all these photos have.

They all look clean and tidy. We are programmed to enjoy tidiness and your brain will thank you for giving it the opportunity to work faster.
